Deze onderzoeksmaster bouwt voort op een internationaal erkend onderzoeksprogramma op het gebied van de rechtsgeschiedenis, de geschiedenis van het politieke denken en de geschiedenis van de wijsbegeerte. Dit onderzoek vindt plaats aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam binnen het Erasmus Center for Early Modern Studies. Recentelijk is aan het onderzoek van onze leden de hoogste waardering (het cijfer 5) toegekend in het kader van een onderzoeksvisitatie.

Intellectuele geschiedenis van de Vroegmoderne Tijd (ca. 1450-1750) heeft zich in de afgelopen decennia in een sterk toenemende wetenschappelijke belangstelling mogen verheugen. Studenten van deze onderzoeksmaster zullen worden ingewijd in het vak van gedegen wetenschappelijk onderzoek op het gebied van rechtsgeschiedenis, politieke en wijsgerige geschiedenis van de Vroegmoderne Tijd. Ook biedt deze opleiding de mogelijkheid om deels in het buitenland te studeren en internationale ervaring op te doen. Tot onze partners behoren Corpus Christi College in Oxford, de faculteit Rechtsgeleerdheid van de Universiteit van Trento (Italië), de faculteit Wijsbegeerte van de Universiteit van Verona (Italië) en het Centre for Renaissance and Reformation Studies aan de Universiteit van York (Engeland). This course addresses some of the amazingly rich and fascinating questions that pertain both to philosophy and to war. Why do people wage war? Is war an essential attribute of human nature or is it a cultural phenomenon? How were military strategists influenced by their intellectual environment? What is the relation between war and politics? And what is the nature of military genius? The present course has a multidisciplinary character and takes into account the answers to these questions by philosophers, military strategists, and historians. The course pertains mainly, but not exclusively to the early modern period in Europe, or the ‘Gunpowder Era’. What was the distinctive character of early modern warfare? By what combination of economic, social and cultural factors did Europe gain a clear military ascendancy over the rest of the world? The course consists of ten sessions, each session is devoted to a particular theme.

N.B. The course is open to participants in the Early Modern Research Master (5 ECTS) and participants in the Research Master "Institutions" (5 ECTS for the exam plus an additional 2 ECTS for an essay = 7 ECTS). In addition, the course can be followed as a special subject by master students in philosophy and other studies (5 ECTS for the exam plus an additional 2 ECTS for an essay = 7 ECTS).
