Principles, Parties and Protestantism:
Dutch Foreign Policy in the Forty Years War (1672-1713)
Between 1672 and 1713 the Dutch Republic fought a prolongued war which ultimately led to her decline. Historians have usually argued that the conflict was caused by French aggression, and that the Dutch Republic had no choice but to defend herself. The question is whether the Republic was really an innocent victim, and if not, whether ideological choices had a larger impact upon foreign policy than has hitherto been argued. The answer to this question also requires rethinking the classic Realist perspective of foreign policy.
Time: 3-5 pm
Place: Erasmus University Rotterdam, Campus Woudestein, L-Building, Room 5-098 (Desideriuszaal)
Admission to all seminar sessions is free. You are very welcome.
